Rodri Reveals Real Madrid and Mourinho Tried to Sign Him
Barcelona midfielder Rodri has revealed that Real Madrid made a strong effort to sign him before he ultimately decided to join Barça.
Speaking to COPE, Rodri confirmed that Real Madrid held direct talks with him and did everything possible to convince him to move to the Spanish giants.
“Real Madrid tried strongly to sign me. We had direct talks, they really gave everything they had to make it happen,” Rodrigo said.
The midfielder also revealed that José Mourinho personally shared his enthusiasm about bringing him to the club. According to Rodri, Mourinho spoke about his football ideas and made a strong impression during their conversations.
“José Mourinho shared with me his enthusiasm to get me, his football idea… it attracted me a lot. He’s a top coach,” Rodri explained.
Despite Real Madrid’s efforts, Rodrigo eventually chose Barcelona, with the midfielder describing the decision as a sporting one.
“Then I decided to join Barça and not Madrid due to a sporting decision. Here I can grow way more,” he said.
Rodri admitted that Real Madrid made the decision difficult but expressed gratitude for the interest shown by the club.
“Real Madrid made my decision difficult. I am grateful,” he added.
The revelation highlights how close Rodrigo was to joining Real Madrid before opting for Barcelona, with the midfielder believing the move to Barça would provide the right environment for his continued development.
