Trump Calls for New Ukraine President, Blames Zelenskyy for Rising Diesel Prices

Written by Mary Bassey

United States President Donald Trump has called for Ukraine to elect a new president, accusing Volodymyr Zelenskyy of failing to reach a peace agreement with Russia and contributing to rising diesel prices in the US.

According to the Associated Press (AP), Trump made the remarks on Saturday, October 10, 2026, while criticising Zelenskyy’s handling of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.

Trump argued that Ukraine needed a leader capable of negotiating an agreement to end the conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

“I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal because he could have made many deals and for some reason he never does,” Trump said.

The US president also blamed Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries for contributing to higher diesel prices, claiming that the strikes were affecting American farmers and ranchers.

Trump’s comments came a day after he announced an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to increase the supply of Russian diesel to the US and international markets.

Under the announced arrangement, Russia is expected to supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately, followed by additional shipments in November and subsequent months.

The move is aimed at easing fuel costs ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections. However, questions remain about the timing of the deliveries and the extent to which the agreement will reduce prices.

The deal has drawn criticism from Zelenskyy, who warned that allowing Russia to earn more from energy exports could help Moscow finance its continued military operations against Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president also condemned Russia’s latest attacks on his country. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian strikes killed at least 20 people, including three children, in the Zaporizhzhia region on Saturday, while several others were injured.

Zelenskyy argued that easing restrictions on Russian energy exports could encourage further attacks rather than bring the war closer to an end.

Trump’s latest remarks have added to tensions between Washington and Kyiv as efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict continue.
