Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has dismissed allegations that the Federal Government has concentrated road projects in the South-East under his leadership.
Umahi said road projects being handled by the Ministry of Works are distributed across different parts of the country based on approvals granted by President Bola Tinubu.
The minister made the clarification while inspecting the ongoing Trans-Sahara Highway project, which begins from Afikpo in Ebonyi State, passes through parts of Benue, Enugu and Kogi states, and terminates at Owete Bridge in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to Umahi, claims circulating on social media that he had “cornered” federal road projects to the South-East were unfounded.
He stressed that the projects were not being allocated at his personal discretion, noting that the President remains the approving authority for major federal infrastructure projects.
Umahi also said the South-East deserves its share of national infrastructure development but maintained that this should not be interpreted as preferential treatment for the region.
He further directed the contractor handling the Trans-Sahara Highway to work simultaneously on three sections of the project to accelerate construction and ensure timely delivery.
The minister added that the Federal Government has continued to approve and execute major road projects across the six geopolitical zones as part of its broader infrastructure programme.
