The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Professor Offiong Efanga Offiong, has appointed new Heads of Department (HODs) for four academic departments, alongside two Acting Heads of Department, in a move aimed at strengthening administrative efficiency and academic delivery.
The appointments, announced through separate letters signed by the Vice-Chancellor, affect the Departments of Chemical Pathology and Immunology, Animal Science, Pharmacology, Business Management, Accounting and Human Physiology.
According to the appointment letters, Professor Lawson Ekpeni Ekpe has been appointed Head of the Department of Chemical Pathology and Immunology in the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, while Professor Ozung Pascal O. will head the Department of Animal Science.
Similarly, Professor Francis Vincent Udoh has been appointed Head of the Department of Pharmacology, while Professor Abosede Usoro will lead the Department of Business Management.
The appointments of the four substantive Heads of Department will take effect from October 1, 2026, and run until September 30, 2029, covering a three-year tenure.
In a related development, Dr Inyang William Smart has been appointed Acting Head of the Department of Accounting, while Dr Ekpe Azibo will serve as Acting Head of the Department of Human Physiology in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences.
Both acting appointments are for an initial period of two years, beginning October 1, 2026, and ending September 30, 2028.
The newly appointed academic administrators are expected to deploy their professional experience and expertise in managing their respective departments, improving administrative processes and ensuring the achievement of institutional objectives.
They are also expected to align their leadership with the vision and mission of the present university administration while upholding the institution’s standards, values and expectations.
However, the Vice-Chancellor warned that the university management would not hesitate to sanction any Head of Department who fails to submit students’ results within the stipulated timeframe.
The warning underscores the administration’s emphasis on timely result processing, accountability and improved academic service delivery across the university.
The appointments are expected to take effect as the University of Calabar continues efforts to strengthen departmental leadership and enhance its academic and administrative operations.
