Written by Mary Bassey

A 64-year-old man in Virginia, United States, has been charged after allegedly tying his wife to a chair in their basement so he could watch a football game upstairs without interruption.

The suspect, identified as Terry Ward, was arrested after police responded to a reported domestic disturbance at his residence in Richmond, Virginia, at about 11:30 p.m.

According to reports citing a criminal complaint, Ward’s wife told responding officers that her husband had restrained her with tape and left her tied to a chair in the basement while he watched the game upstairs.

The woman reportedly said she was restrained for approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Officers also observed marks and tape residue on both her arms, according to the complaint.

Ward allegedly admitted to police that he had tied his wife to a chair and left her in the basement.

Following the investigation, he was charged with felony abduction and misdemeanour assault on a family member.

Court records cited in media reports indicate that Ward is scheduled to appear before the Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court on November 10, 2026.

The case has attracted attention because of the alleged circumstances surrounding the incident. However, the allegations remain subject to the legal process, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
