The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has secured a sweeping victory in the August 29, 2026 local government elections in Anambra State, winning all 21 chairmanship positions and the councillorship seats across the state.
The result was announced on Sunday by the Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), Genevieve Osakwe, at the commission’s headquarters in Awka.
According to Osakwe, APGA candidates emerged victorious in all 21 local government areas, while the party also secured the councillorship positions as declared at the ward level.
The outcome followed an election in which APGA faced limited opposition across the state. The Young Progressives Party (YPP) was the only other party that fielded candidates, with its participation limited to Anambra East Local Government Area.
The ruling party therefore entered the poll without opposition in 20 of the state’s 21 local government areas, while the contest in Anambra East provided the only direct challenge to APGA.
The election was conducted across Anambra’s 21 local government areas, with electoral officials and security personnel deployed to polling and collation centres.
Reports from parts of the state indicated that the exercise was largely peaceful, although voter turnout was low in some areas.
The latest victory further strengthens APGA’s dominance in Anambra politics and gives the party control of the state’s grassroots political structure.
The results also mark another significant local electoral victory for the party under Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration.
