LaLiga president Javier Tebas has called on the Premier League to impose the strongest possible punishment on Manchester City following reports that the club was found guilty of almost all 115 alleged financial rule breaches.
Tebas, who has repeatedly criticised Manchester City’s financial practices, said the club should face severe sanctions if the reported findings are upheld, arguing that the case should serve as a warning to other clubs across European football.
According to reports, an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of 114 out of the 115 charges relating to alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations, with some of the accusations dating back to 2009.
Speaking at the Peak Performance & Health Summit in London on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, Tebas stressed that the duration and seriousness of the alleged violations warranted significant consequences.
He said the punishment should not merely be intended to set an example but should also reflect the importance of enforcing financial regulations consistently across football.
Tebas added that the case had implications beyond English football, particularly regarding concerns over financial sustainability and fair competition among European clubs.
The LaLiga chief also questioned the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) 2020 decision to overturn UEFA’s two-year Champions League ban on Manchester City, arguing that the latest reported findings reinforced the need to review the earlier ruling.
Manchester City, however, has consistently denied any wrongdoing and maintains that the Premier League’s disciplinary process is still ongoing.
The club’s chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, recently reaffirmed its confidence in proving its innocence, insisting that the legal process has not reached its conclusion.
Potential sanctions against the Premier League champions could include substantial fines, points deductions or relegation, depending on the final outcome of the proceedings.
The case has also raised questions about possible compensation claims from rival clubs and the broader implications for football’s financial regulations.
