The International Human Rights Special Envoy, Amb. Dr. Charles Omini, has urged Nigerians to be mindful of their utterances and actions as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Omini gave the warning while calling on politicians, political supporters, youths and other stakeholders to embrace responsible communication and avoid statements capable of inflaming tensions or threatening the peace and democratic stability of the country.
According to him, the 2027 elections should be approached as an opportunity for Nigerians to strengthen democracy rather than create division, hostility and violence.
He stressed that freedom of expression comes with responsibility, urging Nigerians to guide their words, particularly on social media and other public platforms.
The International Human Rights Special Envoy warned that provocative statements, personal attacks, hate speech and inflammatory political rhetoric could create unnecessary tension and undermine the democratic process.
He called on political actors and their supporters to focus on issues, policies and programmes capable of improving the lives of citizens instead of engaging in activities that could threaten peaceful coexistence.
Omini also urged young Nigerians to resist being used to cause violence during the election period, reminding them that democracy thrives when citizens are allowed to freely express their opinions, support candidates of their choice and participate in elections without intimidation.
He emphasised the importance of respecting opposing views, saying political differences should not become a reason for Nigerians to attack one another or destroy the institutions that sustain democracy.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, Omini appealed to Nigerians to put the interest of the nation above personal and political interests.
He maintained that protecting democracy is a collective responsibility and urged citizens to contribute positively to the electoral process through peaceful participation, responsible speech and respect for the rule of law.
“Guide your utterances. We won’t allow you to destroy democracy,” Omini warned, stressing that all Nigerians have a role to play in preserving the country’s democratic values.
He further encouraged political leaders, civil society organisations, security agencies, the media and citizens to work together to ensure that the 2027 elections are conducted in an atmosphere of peace, tolerance and respect for fundamental human rights.
