House of Representatives Committee to Conduct Forensic Investigation into Financial Activities of Universities
The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has announced plans to conduct a forensic investigation into the financial activities of several universities, including the University of Calabar, University of Port Harcourt, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, and others.
The decision follows discrepancies and irreconcilable data observed in the documents presented to the committee during their oversight visit to the universities in the South-South Region.
Committee Chairman, Abubakar Hassan Fulata, stated that the forensic examination is necessary to ensure transparency and accountability in the financial management of the universities.
The committee also visited other universities, including Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State, and Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko, Warri South, Delta State, and required further investigation.

Fulata emphasized that the committee’s oversight visit aims to identify challenges in the universities and develop strategies to address them.
The committee has visited over 30 federal universities in 21 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in the last few weeks.
Members of the committee warned against misinterpreting their mission and emphasized that they are carrying out their constitutional roles to ensure accountability and transparency in the universities.

The committee also called on university management to prioritize students’ affairs and allocate resources accordingly.
