Professor Florence Banku, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, has urged all levels of government in Nigeria to prioritize the needs of people living with disabilities by Implementing Disability Act in Nigeria

She made this appeal during her address at the 1st National Colloquium/Conference on Special Needs Education, held in honor of Professor Emeka Desmond Ozoji at the University of Calabar.

The conference, themed “Nigerian Special Needs Education in Search of an Identity,” brought together prominent figures in the field to discuss the future and prospects for individuals with disabilities which rise to recognition of creating Disability Act in Nigeria

Professor Obi emphasized that special needs education extends beyond professionals and those with disabilities, noting that anyone could find themselves in a similar situation. She recounted the story of renowned author Professor Chinua Achebe, who became disabled later in life, and called on altruistic individuals and corporate entities to support the implementation of the Disability Act in Nigeria, enabling those with disabilities to integrate into society.

In her tribute to the honoree, Professor Emeka Desmond Ozoji, the Vice Chancellor praised him as a distinguished academic, dedicated worker, prolific writer, and editor, highlighting his significant contributions to special needs education and his exceptional mentorship of others, including herself.

Earlier in the event, the Colloquium Convener and National Planning Chairman, Professor Julius Ademokoya, praised the Vice Chancellor for her leadership and contributions to the profession.

The conference was attended by esteemed guests, including Professor Emeka Desmond Ozoji (the honoree), Professor Shaykh-Luqman Alade Jimoh (Vice Chancellor of Kwara State University, represented by Deputy VC Academics Dr. Olubokola Dada), Dr. Deborah Agu, and others.
