Darkness in Calabar continue- Lastest Update.

Darkness in Calabar continues- latest update.

Calabar has been experiencing widespread  darkness for the past eight days following the heavy windstorm occuring late on Saturday, the 9th of November 2024.

On Sunday, the 10th of November, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company released an official statement concerning the sudden power outage.

Informing its customers in Calabar that the total darkness being experienced was due to the damage done by the windstorm that occurred the previous night.

The statement read;

“We wish to inform our esteemed customers that the total darkness in calabar causing the abrupt power outage currently experienced is a result of a heavy wind storm that damaged many poles in our network,”

Ending by assuring the general public that prompt attention is being given to situation.

Stating that it’s technical team is working tirelessly to ensure the timely restoration of power supply to the residents of calabar municipality.

Some of the area experiencing darkness include University of Calabar, Ettagbor, Calabar south, Eight Miles, Federal housing Estate, EPZ complex, Nigeria mills, MCC, Essien town, Diamond, Stadium and Marian.

Eyewitnesses reported that the powerful windstorm not only brought down electric poles but also destroyed power lines and transformers supplying power to the affected areas, further complicating efforts to restore electricity.

Substantial repairs covering the replacement of damaged poles, repairing damaged transformers, and rewiring several high-voltage lines will be required to restore power.

This had contributed greatly to the delay in the restoration of light in Calabar.

The recurring collapse of the Nigeria’s National power grid has made the situation in Calabar even harder to address.

Nigeria has experienced over ten power grid failure in the past year each occasionally leaving regions of the Nation in darkness.

This has raised the concerns of many Nigerians on how seriously the Federal Ministry of power are taking their jobs.

Residents of calabar are complaining profusely as their daily life and business suffers greatly due to the ensuing darkness.

Current situation

Seven days after the windstorm, there is still no light in most parts of calabar.

Some areas have testified of infrequent flashes and restoration of light but still no consistent power supply.

Residents in Ekpo Abasi and some parts of Ettagbor have confirmed that they now have light.

People living in Eight miles, Stadium and Federal housing and it’s environs are still  left in darkness.

The power outage coupled with the high cost of fuel in the state has exacerbated the crisis.

Thus, making life much more difficult for the residents of calabar.

Residents have shared their distress and disappointment in the PHEDC and State government for not being able to resolve the situation in almost ten days.

As they eagerly expect the darkness in the People’s paradise to soon be a thing of the past.

Anticipating when their lives will return to normal.

We strongly advise residents of the areas still in darkness to explore other means of generating light.

Options like Torches with removable batteries, lanterns and generators.

We encourage residents of Calabar to exercise patience and bear with the PHEDC.

As it  attempts to promptly restore power and alleviate the darkness in calabar.
