Group call out Asuquo Ekpenyong Over 100 Million NDDC Funds

The Niger Delta Activists Forum (NDAF) has raised concerns over the alleged misappropriation of ₦100 million allocated by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) as a Christmas bonus for 50 groups in Cross River State.

Initially, allegations pointed at Rt. Hon. Otuekong Orok Otu Duke, the Cross River State Representative on the NDDC Governing Board, accusing him of diverting the funds to fictitious groups. However, in his defense, Mr. Duke released a press statement denying any wrongdoing and instead shifting the focus to Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, stating:

“The Commission earmarked ₦100 million for distribution to 50 groups in Cross River State, with each group expected to receive ₦2 million. Unfortunately, this project was hijacked by the Senator representing the Southern Senatorial District, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, who took control of the funds without consulting me as the state representative. For the record, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong is currently in possession of the ₦100 million released by the NDDC for youths and women across the three senatorial zones of Cross River State.”

Call for Accountability by Niger Delta Activists Forum

Since Mr. Duke’s revelation, Senator Ekpenyong has remained silent, failing to address or refute the allegations. This silence raises concerns, especially since the funds were not meant for any single senatorial district but for the entire state, meaning all relevant stakeholders deserve clarity on its disbursement.

As a group committed to transparency and accountability in the Niger Delta, the NDAF demands answers to the following:

  1. Who is in custody of the ₦100 million?
  2. How was the fund administered?
  3. Who are the beneficiaries?
  4. What process was followed in the disbursement?

A 72-Hour Ultimatum

The NDAF clarifies that it is not accusing Senator Ekpenyong of financial misconduct but is simply demanding accountability. However, if he fails to respond within 72 hours, the group will invoke its rights under the Freedom of Information Act to demand full disclosure.

The Niger Delta region deserves justice, transparency, and responsible leadership, and we will not relent in our pursuit of these principles.
