World Press Freedom Day is a significant occasion that highlights the importance of a free and independent press in safeguarding democracy and human rights. As the Fourth Estate of the realm, the press is not just a pillar of democracy but the conscience of society. It informs, educates, and empowers the people while holding leaders accountable.

This year’s theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” highlights how emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence(AI) are reshaping journalism, media operations, and press freedom. Governments at all levels must renew their commitment to upholding press freedom, protecting journalists, and ensuring transparency, freedom of expression, and access to information for all.
On this occasion of World Press Freedom Day, I salute all journalists across Nigeria for their resilience, professionalism, unwavering dedication, and invaluable contributions to society. I call upon you to amplify the voices of the marginalized, support peacebuilding and state-building efforts, and uphold principles of transparency and accountability in your reporting.
