Unical Female Hostel Hall 9:Occupants Experiences Electric Shocks among others as they Cry Out Over Neglect And Life-Threatening Conditions

Residents of Hall 9, a female hostel at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), have raised alarm over the deteriorating state of their accommodation, claiming the school management has neglected their cries for help, leaving them in conditions they describe as “life-threatening.”

According to the students, their rooms have been plagued by severe leakages during rainfall, which often leads to flooding and potential electrical hazards. One of the occupants shared her frustration, stating that she can neither study at night nor leave the room to study elsewhere due to the risk of flooding. She added that many students have had their books, clothes, and food items soaked and destroyed by water.

Further interactions with other residents revealed that this is not an isolated issue multiple rooms across the hostel are affected.

The students claimed that repeated complaints were made to the hall administrators who have also said they have gone unanswered by the school Management.

A video taken on June 13 shows students sweeping floodwater from their rooms and turning off electrical switches to avoid getting shocked. “This is no longer just discomfort it’s a matter of life and death,” one of them said.

Despite their grievances, the students expressed appreciation for Prof. Florence Obi’s efforts in rehabilitating several structures across the university. However, they urged the Vice Chancellor to urgently focus on existing hostels like Hall 9, which they say are now dilapidated and unsafe for human habitation.
