The Cross River State Taskforce Anti illegal mining led by Mr Prince Paul Effiong is celebrating his one year anniversary in Office, This celebration began with a Walk from cultural Centre to municipal garden where the grand celebration of elites where gathered
During the event proper which began with an opening speech by Hon. Eric Anderson, Chairman of the occasion, who represented the Senator representing the Southern Senatorial District, Sen. Asuquo Ekpenyong. He emphasized the importance of the Anti-Illegal Mining Committee and commended the impressive progress made so far. Hon. Anderson urged the people to join hands in ensuring the success of the committee’s mission and expressed appreciation to the Governor for initiating such a timely and impactful intervention, which is now yielding visible benefits across the state.
Representing the Governor of Cross River State, Otuekong Francis Edet applauded the commitment and achievements of the Committee Chairman, Prince Paul Effiong. He explained that the Governor’s decision to establish the committee stemmed from his resolve to combat illegal mining and protect the state’s natural resources. Francis praised Prince Paul’s remarkable mobilization strength across ethnic groups and encouraged citizens to report any illegal mining activities to the committee. He also acknowledged the presence of Paramount Rulers, describing their attendance as a sign of unity, royalty, and joy.
Speaking on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals, Mr Henry Adele Alake highlighted the growing rate of illegal mining and its adverse effects on the state’s economy and environment. The Ministry urged residents to remain vigilant and to report anyone involved in unauthorized mining activities — stressing the slogan, “If you see something, say something.” The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the arrest and prosecution of illegal miners.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Anti-Illegal Mining Committee, Prince Paul Effiong, expressed deep appreciation to all attendees, especially the Paramount Rulers who traveled from the Northern and Central Senatorial Districts. He assured that the committee’s second year in office would record even greater success in curbing illegal mining.
Prince Paul commended the Federal Ministry for its continuous support and revealed that the state had already generated over ₦1 billion in revenue to the federal government from the mining sector. He called on traditional rulers and community leaders to collaborate actively in sustaining these achievements.
He emphasized contentment as the guiding principle of his team’s success and survival. Prince Paul also appreciated the Saraki, Local Government Chairmen, and the leadership of the military for their unwavering cooperation in the fight against illegal mining.
