The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport, Wasiu Eshinlokun, has called on state governments across Nigeria to adopt and implement the country’s National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy to unlock the enormous economic potential of the maritime sector.
Eshinlokun made the call during the Second Quarter 2026 Citizens and Stakeholders’ Engagement organised by the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in Lagos.
According to him, the successful implementation of the policy at both federal and state levels will strengthen Nigeria’s maritime industry, attract investment, create employment opportunities, and promote sustainable management of the nation’s marine resources.
He described the National Policy on the Marine and Blue Economy as a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to diversify its economy by maximising the vast opportunities available in its oceans, inland waterways, ports, fisheries, tourism, and other marine-related sectors.
The lawmaker stressed the need for greater collaboration between the Federal Government and sub-national governments to ensure the policy delivers meaningful economic benefits across the country.
He also urged relevant stakeholders, including private sector operators, development partners, and coastal communities, to support the effective implementation of the policy to drive inclusive growth and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global blue economy.
