The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested two suspected cultists in connection with the killing of a student of Niger Delta University during a suspected cult-related attack in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.
According to the police, the arrests followed a violent clash between rival cult groups that claimed the life of the undergraduate and heightened tension within the university community.
The command disclosed that the two suspects were apprehended while allegedly mobilising members of their group to launch a reprisal attack after a suspected member of their gang was killed during the earlier confrontation.
Police said the swift operation was carried out to prevent further bloodshed and restore calm in the area. The suspects are currently in custody and are assisting investigators with ongoing efforts to identify and arrest other individuals connected to the incident.
The command reassured residents that security operatives have intensified surveillance around Amassoma and neighbouring communities to forestall any further outbreak of violence.
It also urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and provide useful information that could aid the investigation.
Authorities said anyone found to be involved in the killing or any related criminal activity would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
