Why the FG Wants Every Emergency Call in Nigeria to Go Through 112

Written by Mary Bassey

The Federal Government has announced plans to adopt 112 as Nigeria’s unified emergency telephone number, a move aimed at improving emergency response and making it easier for citizens to access help during crises.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Stanley Nkwocha.

According to the statement, the Federal Government will engage state governors, emergency response agencies and other key stakeholders to finalise the framework for the nationwide implementation of the single emergency number.

The initiative is expected to harmonise existing emergency contact numbers across the country, allowing Nigerians to dial 112 to report emergencies such as security threats, medical emergencies, fire outbreaks, road accidents and other urgent situations.

The government said the adoption of a single emergency number is part of broader efforts to strengthen coordination among emergency service providers, improve response times and enhance public safety nationwide.

Once fully implemented, the 112 emergency line will serve as the central point of contact for emergency services across Nigeria, replacing the current system where different agencies operate separate emergency numbers.
