Graduates of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Department of English have been encouraged to embrace lifelong learning, remain adaptable, and continually develop new skills to stay relevant in today’s fast-changing job market.
The charge was given during the maiden reunion of the University of Lagos Department of English Alumni, where speakers stressed that earning a degree in English should not be seen as a limitation but as a strong foundation for diverse career opportunities.
Speaking at the event on Friday, Professor of Digital Linguistics and Discourse, Tunde Ope-Davies, urged graduates to remain resilient and committed to personal and professional growth. He noted that success in today’s world requires continuous learning, innovation, and the willingness to evolve beyond one’s academic qualifications.
Reflecting on his own academic and professional journey, Ope-Davies explained that perseverance, self-development, and embracing new opportunities had played significant roles in shaping his career. He encouraged alumni and current students to invest in acquiring digital, communication, and leadership skills that would make them competitive in an increasingly dynamic global workforce.
According to him, a degree in English opens doors to careers in education, media, public relations, publishing, digital communication, content development, corporate management, and several other sectors, provided graduates are willing to expand their knowledge and adapt to changing industry demands.
Participants at the reunion also highlighted the importance of networking, mentorship, and collaboration among alumni, describing the gathering as an opportunity to strengthen professional relationships and support the next generation of English graduates.
The event celebrated the achievements of the department’s alumni while reaffirming the need for graduates to embrace innovation, lifelong learning, and career flexibility in an era driven by technology and evolving workplace demands.
