Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has unveiled a statue in honour of the late literary icon, Professor Chinua Achebe, in his hometown of Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The monument, located at the Ugwu Nwasike Roundabout, was officially unveiled on Friday as a lasting tribute to Achebe’s immense contributions to literature and his enduring global legacy.

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest writers, Achebe gained international acclaim through his groundbreaking novel, Things Fall Apart, which remains one of the most widely read African literary works across the world.

Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Soludo described the statue as a symbol of honour and appreciation for Achebe’s extraordinary achievements and lifelong impact on society.

According to the governor, the monument is also intended to inspire younger generations to pursue excellence in writing, storytelling, and other creative endeavours.

Soludo added that recognising distinguished sons and daughters of Anambra forms part of his administration’s commitment to preserving the state’s rich cultural heritage and history.

He noted that the landmark would further boost tourism in Ogidi while reinforcing Anambra’s reputation as a hub for arts, literature, culture, and creativity.

Residents, traditional leaders, and guests at the event commended the initiative, describing it as a well-deserved honour for a literary giant whose works continue to influence readers and scholars around the globe.

The unveiling of the statue marks another milestone in Anambra State’s efforts to celebrate its cultural icons and preserve their legacies for future generations.
