Written by Mary Bassey

The Governing Council of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has dismissed eight members of staff and sanctioned another over various acts of misconduct, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to discipline, integrity and accountability. The decision was reached at the Council’s 174th meeting.

The disciplinary actions were contained in a memo signed by the University’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dr. Mrs. Icha Chukwuka. Professor Emilia Oyira of the Department of Nursing Science was dismissed over alleged examination misconduct.

Four other academic and non-academic staff members were also dismissed for alleged absence from duty and abandonment of post. They are Mr. Ukachukwu Echezunachi Darlington, Mrs. Akinrinade Opayemi Ogunluyi, Dr. Arum Priscilia Nchekwube and Mrs. Okoi Nyesam Eni.

The Council further dismissed Mr. Joseph Edet Okon of the Works Department for allegedly vandalising and carting away armoured cables. Mr. Eworo Valentine Ibor of the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry also lost his appointment over the alleged falsification of examination results.

Mr. Emmanuel Adariku of the Alumni Relations Office was dismissed for allegedly making unauthorised withdrawals from the Friends of Malabor/Alumni Trust Funds account.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mathias Agba of the Department of Nursing Science had his promotion delayed for two promotional years and will forfeit 50 per cent of his withheld salary over negligence linked to an examination misconduct case.

The university management, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, said the sanctions reflect its zero-tolerance policy on unethical conduct and warned that disciplinary action would continue against anyone found guilty of misconduct.
