Residents, traders and commuters were thrown into panic on Saturday after a commercial bus reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into a shop at the popular Challenge Market in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The accident involved an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus, which was said to have lost control while approaching the busy market. Witnesses said the driver was unable to stop the vehicle after its brakes allegedly failed, causing it to veer off the road.
The bus reportedly rammed through a concrete barricade before crashing into a shop within the market, sending traders and shoppers scrambling for safety as the incident unfolded.
Fortunately, no deaths were recorded in the crash. Although the impact caused damage to the affected shop and sparked fear among people in the area, no serious injuries were immediately reported.
Eyewitnesses attributed the incident to suspected brake failure and praised the driver for making efforts to avoid hitting pedestrians despite losing control of the vehicle.
The incident temporarily disrupted traffic and commercial activities around the Challenge Market axis as residents gathered at the scene before normalcy was gradually restored.
The latest accident has renewed concerns over vehicle maintenance and road safety, with residents calling on commercial transport operators to ensure their vehicles are properly serviced to prevent similar incidents.
