The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to deploying psychological and influence operations as key non-kinetic strategies for preventing conflicts, strengthening national stability, and promoting lasting peace.
Oluyede made the declaration during the opening of the two-day Defence Headquarters Psychological Operations Workshop held in Abuja from July 23 to 24, 2026. He was represented at the event by the Chief of Defence Training, Rear Admiral Abolade Ogunleye.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, and shared via the Defence Headquarters’ official X account, the workshop was organised to enhance the Armed Forces’ capacity to effectively counter misinformation, disinformation, and hostile narratives that threaten national security.
The CDS stressed that modern security challenges extend beyond conventional warfare, making strategic communication and psychological operations increasingly vital in addressing insurgency, terrorism, violent extremism, and other emerging threats.
He noted that information has become a powerful tool capable of influencing public perception, shaping behaviour, and determining the outcome of conflicts. As a result, he urged participants to develop innovative communication strategies that promote trust, national unity, and public confidence in security institutions.
Oluyede also encouraged military personnel and other stakeholders attending the workshop to leverage the knowledge gained in improving operational effectiveness while supporting the Armed Forces’ broader mission of safeguarding Nigeria’s peace and stability.
The workshop brought together military officers, communication experts, and other security stakeholders to discuss best practices in psychological operations, strategic messaging, and influence campaigns aimed at addressing contemporary security challenges.
