A United States lobbying firm linked to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has renewed its campaign for the release of records related to President Bola Tinubu’s past case in the US, while unveiling plans to widen its advocacy by engaging anti-drug organisations and victims of heroin abuse.
The firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, disclosed the move in a statement published on its official X account on Saturday. It alleged that US law enforcement agencies under former President Joe Biden failed to release documents connected to Tinubu’s alleged links to a heroin trafficking investigation despite several requests made under the Freedom of Information Act.
According to the statement, the requests were filed by American transparency advocate Aaron Greenspan and directed to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The lobbying firm claimed the agencies either withheld or failed to provide the requested records and insisted that greater transparency was necessary in the public interest.
It also announced plans to reach out to anti-drug advocacy groups and individuals affected by heroin addiction in the United States as part of efforts to sustain pressure for the release of the documents.
The renewed campaign follows years of legal and political debates surrounding Tinubu’s 1993 forfeiture of $460,000 to US authorities in a civil case linked to alleged narcotics proceeds. President Tinubu has consistently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that he was never charged with or convicted of any drug-related offence in the United States.
The latest development is expected to reignite public discussion over the long-running controversy, although US authorities have not publicly responded to the lobbying firm’s latest claims.
