A former Chief Press Secretary to the first female Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Comrade Cynthia Maduekwe, has publicly endorsed the current SUG administration’s one-week free shuttle ride and foodstuff distribution initiative, describing it as a practical demonstration of student-focused leadership.
Maduekwe commended the initiative for addressing two of the major challenges currently facing many students—rising transportation costs and increasing food prices. According to her, the welfare programme reflects empathy, responsiveness and a genuine commitment to improving students’ daily lives.
She described the initiative as “empathy in motion” and “student-centered leadership,” noting that providing free transportation and food support has eased the financial burden on many students while encouraging regular class attendance across the university’s campuses.
The one-week programme featured free shuttle bus services for students and the distribution of food items to help cushion the effects of the current economic situation. The initiative attracted positive reactions from students who benefited from the support throughout the exercise.
As the programme gradually comes to an end, Maduekwe applauded the efforts of the current SUG executives for prioritising student welfare. She encouraged students to continue supporting leaders who introduce meaningful policies and programmes that directly impact the student community.
According to her, initiatives that promote students’ welfare should be encouraged, as they contribute to a more supportive and conducive learning environment.
“When leadership works for students, we must support it,” she stated.
