Fayose Reveals What Darkness After 7pm Is Doing to Rural Communities

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has linked the lack of electricity in rural communities to limited nighttime activities and what he described as a possible increase in population growth.

Fayose made the remarks on Friday in Abuja after he was inaugurated as Chairman of the Board of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

Speaking in a video clip shared by ARISE News on Saturday, the former governor said the absence of electricity in many rural communities had significantly affected residents’ social and recreational activities at night.

According to him, residents in communities without reliable electricity often have few alternatives for entertainment or outdoor activities after sunset, leaving many people indoors.

Fayose said the situation could also contribute to increased sexual activity and, consequently, population growth in such communities.

He said, “Why you don’t address this issue of electricity? The people at that level have no alternative attraction. Nothing else matters to them. After 7 o’clock, it gets dark there.”

The former governor’s comments came as he assumed his new role at the Rural Electrification Agency, the Federal Government body responsible for promoting electricity access in underserved and off-grid communities across Nigeria.

Fayose’s remarks have drawn attention to the wider social impact of Nigeria’s electricity challenges, particularly in rural areas where access to reliable power remains limited.

Beyond its economic implications, inadequate electricity can affect education, healthcare, businesses and social activities, especially after sunset.

His comments have therefore renewed discussions about the need to expand reliable electricity access to rural communities and improve the quality of life of residents.
