The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has disowned an alleged illegal Distance Learning Centre operating in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, warning members of the public against individuals using the university’s name and logo to advertise unauthorised academic programmes.
In a circular signed by the University Registrar, Dr. (Mrs.) Chukwuka I. Icha, the university identified the centre as Bori Business School, reportedly located at the NUJ Press Centre, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
According to the university, the centre allegedly advertises Diploma, B.Sc., B.A., PGD and Ph.D. programmes while using UNICAL’s identity.
UNICAL Denies Affiliation With Bori Business School
The university management stated that Bori Business School has no affiliation with the University of Calabar and has never been authorised to operate any academic programme on behalf of the institution.
UNICAL further recalled that it discontinued the operation of satellite campuses in 2003, following a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education through the National Universities Commission (NUC) prohibiting such operations.
The university stressed that it currently has no satellite campus, coordinator or agent authorised to admit students or conduct academic programmes on its behalf outside its approved campuses.
University Warns Prospective Students
Management urged members of the public, particularly prospective students, to exercise caution and verify information concerning UNICAL admissions and academic programmes through the university’s official channels.
The institution warned against dealing with individuals or organisations falsely presenting themselves as representatives or agents of the University of Calabar.
Call for Investigation and Closure
The university has also called on the Rivers State Ministry of Education to investigate the activities of Bori Business School and take appropriate action over what it described as the unauthorised use of UNICAL’s name and logo.
UNICAL management said it completely dissociates itself from the activities of the centre and advised the public to be properly guided to avoid falling victim to fraudulent admission schemes.
The University of Calabar’s Public Relations Unit issued the notice.
