What Happened at Tower 101? Suspected Vandal Found Dead in Delta

Written by Mary Bassey

A suspected vandal has been found crushed to death under a collapsed 330kV transmission tower along the Ughelli–Benin transmission line in Delta State.

The incident occurred on Saturday, August 8, 2026, and was discovered by officials of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) during an intensive patrol of the transmission line.

According to TCN, the patrol was launched after the Ughelli–Benin 330kV transmission line tripped following an earth fault.

The maintenance team from TCN’s Delta Sub-Region Lines Maintenance Department traced the fault to Tower 101, where they discovered that the transmission tower had collapsed.

The linesmen subsequently found the body of a suspected vandal trapped and crushed between the fallen tower members.

TCN said further inspection of the area revealed that Tower 101 on the adjacent Ughelli–Sapele 330kV transmission line had also been seriously vandalised. However, the tower remained standing at the time of the inspection.

The transmission company condemned the vandalism and warned about the dangers associated with tampering with electricity infrastructure.

TCN also appealed to host communities and members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around power installations to security agencies or the nearest TCN office.

The company stressed that protecting transmission infrastructure requires the cooperation of communities and the general public, noting that vandalism threatens both national assets and human lives.
