Veteran Nollywood actor, Sunday Afolabi, has opened up on the difficult circumstances that pushed him into commercial minibus driving, following a viral video showing him calling passengers into a bus popularly known as a “korope.”
Afolabi explained that financial difficulties, the long distance between his home and major film locations, as well as repeated road accidents affected his acting career and made it increasingly difficult for him to remain active in the industry.
Speaking on the Talk to B Show, hosted by actress Biola Adebayo and aired on Tuesday, the veteran actor shared details of the challenges he has faced in recent years and how they have affected his career and family.
According to Afolabi, his decision to relocate to Badagry, a border community in Lagos State, was influenced largely by his limited finances and his desire to build a home he could afford. However, the move came with unintended consequences.
He said living far from the major centres of Nollywood made it difficult for him to attend auditions, film locations and other industry activities, gradually reducing his opportunities for acting jobs.
The actor also spoke about the impact of road accidents and the financial pressure associated with travelling long distances for work.
Afolabi’s situation gained renewed public attention after a video surfaced online showing him working around a commercial bus and calling passengers. The footage sparked concern among fans and renewed discussions about the challenges faced by some veteran actors after years of contributing to the Nigerian film industry.
Earlier reports had revealed that Afolabi took up bus driving as a means of supporting himself while waiting for acting opportunities. Actor Kunle Afod had also appealed for public assistance to help Afolabi acquire his own bus and improve his living conditions.
