Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has insisted that Enzo Fernandez remains an important player for the club as uncertainty continues over the midfielder’s future at Stamford Bridge.
Fernandez has been at the centre of transfer speculation, with Manchester City reportedly considering a move for the Argentina international as they look to strengthen their midfield.
Chelsea had set a £120 million deadline for any potential bid for the 25-year-old, but Manchester City did not make an offer before the deadline passed on August 14. Chelsea subsequently expected Fernandez to remain at the club.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League season opener against Fulham, Alonso said the club are happy with Fernandez and indicated that the midfielder remains focused on his role with the Blues.
The Chelsea boss has also previously spoken positively about Fernandez, who has established himself as an important part of the squad following his move to Stamford Bridge from Benfica.
Fernandez enjoyed a strong 2025/26 campaign, scoring 12 goals for Chelsea, while his performances for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup further attracted attention.
Although speculation surrounding a possible move to Manchester City has not completely disappeared, Chelsea’s position remains clear: Fernandez is currently part of Alonso’s plans.
The midfielder is expected to be available as Chelsea begin their new Premier League campaign, with Alonso looking to rebuild the team after the club finished 10th last season.
