How 75 Travellers Were Rescued From a Mountain Cave in Kaduna

Written by Mary Bassey

The Kaduna State Police Command has rescued 75 travellers, including men, women and children, who were abducted by armed men near Folwaya Village in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The victims were travelling in commercial buses when they were intercepted by gunmen at about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, according to the police.

The attackers reportedly took the travellers into a forest and concealed them inside a cave located in a mountainous area.

The Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday.

Hassan said the rescue operation followed credible and timely information provided by the Birnin Gwari branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

According to him, the NURTW alerted the police after receiving information that several travellers had been abducted around Folwaya Village.

Following the report, a crack team from the Birnin Gwari Area Command was immediately deployed to the location.

The police operatives reportedly encountered the abductors at the hideout. On sighting the armed security personnel, the kidnappers fled, abandoning the victims.

The 75 travellers were subsequently rescued unharmed.

The police spokesperson said the abductors were armed with AK-47 rifles and other sophisticated weapons.

The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, CP Rabiu Muhammad, commended the NURTW branch for providing what he described as timely and vital information that enabled the police to respond quickly.

He also praised the Birnin Gwari Area Commander and his personnel for their swift and professional response.

Muhammad urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies.

He further cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, warning that such actions could endanger innocent lives.
