The final farewell to veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, drew prominent personalities from government and the entertainment industry to Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday.
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Wasiu Isiaka, joined Nollywood veterans and hundreds of sympathisers at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground, where funeral prayers were held for the late actor.
Among those who gathered to honour Ogogo were the President of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria, Bolaji Amusan, popularly known as Mr Latin, as well as veteran actors Yinka Quadri, Jide Kosoko, Femi Adebayo, Faithia Balogun, Ireti Osayemi and other colleagues.
In his remarks, Abiodun described Ogogo as an exceptional theatre practitioner and an icon whose death represented a painful loss to Ogun State, the Nigerian film industry and the wider cultural community.
The governor’s representative praised the late actor for his contribution to Yoruba cinema and his role in promoting Nigerian culture through his decades-long career.
The emotional gathering came barely 24 hours after Ogogo died at the age of 66 on Sunday, August 23, after battling stage-four cancer. His death triggered an outpouring of grief among colleagues, fans and admirers across the country.
Ogogo, an indigene of Ilaro, built a career spanning more than four decades and became one of the recognisable faces of Yoruba-language cinema. He was also known as a filmmaker and screenwriter, with appearances in several notable Nigerian productions.
The veteran actor was laid to rest in Ilaro on Monday in accordance with Islamic rites, bringing an emotional end to the life and career of one of Yoruba cinema’s respected figures.
