Cross River Govt, UCTH strengthen Ties to Advance Nursing Training
The Special Assistant to the Governor of Cross River State on Nursing, Dr. Coco-Bassey, Esu has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening nursing education, clinical training, and healthcare infrastructure in the state.
Dr. Esu stated this during a one-day working visit to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH, where he met with the hospital’s management team and ward managers.
The Special Assistant commended UCTH for providing a conducive environment for the training of nurses from the State Colleges of Nursing and from other public and private health institutions with which the hospital has Memoranda of Understanding.
He lauded the hospital’s management, led by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ikpeme Asanye Ikpeme, for transforming the hospital with modern facilities and equipment. He also appreciated the Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Courtesy Uduku, and ward managers for sustaining high standards of nursing practice and clinical training.
“His Excellency, Apostle Sen. Prince Bassey Otu, remains committed to creating a supportive environment for health workers and ensuring residents have access to quality healthcare”Dr. Esu assured.
Speaking on behalf of the CMD, the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Innocent Abang, described the visit as strategic and expressed optimism that it would deepen collaboration between the Cross River State Government and UCTH in training and hospital support.
The Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Felix Archibong, used the opportunity to call for the establishment of a Cross River State Teaching Hospital and a State College of Medicine to increase the training of indigenous medical and nursing students.
In her remarks, Mrs. Courtesy Uduku, Director of Nursing Services, described the visit as timely, noting that it would strengthen collaboration in the training of student nurses and promote best practices. She called for sustainable nursing education during clinical postings across General Hospitals and other training facilities in the state.
As part of the visit, Dr. Esu and his team undertook a comprehensive inspection of all wards in UCTH, Special recognition was given to Dr. Estella Ohio, a consultant Neurologist at the Neurosurgical and Stroke Centre for her exceptional role in the prompt management and recovery of stroke patients. The Centre was established under the leadership of Prof. Ikpeme.
The Ward Managers also commended Dr. Ohio, describing her as a “nurse-friendly doctor” who supports seamless clinical training.
In another development, the Special Assistant also paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ikpeme Asanye Ikpeme, as part of efforts to further strengthen healthcare services in the state and deepen collaboration on nursing services.
