Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has called for a coordinated regional security strategy to address the growing insecurity confronting communities across the North-Central geopolitical zone.
Mutfwang made the call on Monday while participating as a panellist at the 2026 North-Central Regional Security Summit held in Makurdi, Benue State.
The summit was organised by the Federal Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, North-Central, to examine the security challenges affecting the region and develop collective responses.
The governor stressed that North-Central states could not effectively tackle insecurity through isolated efforts, urging governments and relevant stakeholders to strengthen collaboration, intelligence gathering and coordinated security operations.
Mutfwang also challenged the tendency to describe the violence in the region simply as farmer-herder clashes, arguing that the scale and pattern of attacks in some communities point to a broader security threat requiring a more decisive response.
He warned that continued attacks on communities could undermine Nigeria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, while stressing the need to protect vulnerable communities and create conditions for displaced residents to safely return to their ancestral homes.
The governor further called for stronger cooperation among state governments, security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, communities and other stakeholders in addressing the root causes of insecurity.
The summit brought together governors, security chiefs, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, women, youths and other stakeholders under the theme, “Collaborative Approaches to Strengthening Security and Regional Stability.”
President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, also urged participants to ensure that the summit produces practical recommendations with clear responsibilities, timelines and measurable outcomes.
