The Cross River State Police Command has prevented an alleged mob lynching of a man accused of stealing mobile phones around Harbour Junction, Calabar, following a distress call received at about 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
According to a statement issued by the Command, police operatives promptly responded to the distress call and found a man identified as Chukwu Ebuka being attacked by a mob.
The patrol team reportedly intervened, rescued Ebuka and evacuated him to an undisclosed clinic, where he is receiving treatment for multiple injuries sustained during the attack.
Police Arrest Alleged Instigator
In connection with the incident, police arrested Azubike Micheal, 56, who was allegedly involved in instigating the mob and encouraging others to subject Ebuka to jungle justice.
The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the mob attack and the allegations against Ebuka.
The Police Command said further developments would be communicated as the investigation progresses.
Police Warn Against Jungle Justice
The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, psc, mnips, mspsp, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, preventing crime and maintaining public order.
CP Ordue cautioned residents against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that anyone suspected of committing a crime should be handed over to the police for investigation and prosecution through due process.
He also urged members of the public to promptly report suspected criminal activities and distress situations to the police.
Command Reaffirms Commitment to Public Safety
The Police Command described its intervention as part of its proactive approach to public safety and its determination to prevent threats to life and public order.
The Command reiterated that criminal allegations must be handled through lawful procedures rather than mob violence.
It urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and ensuring that justice is pursued through legitimate legal channels.
