Former Kano State Governor and Vice-Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has questioned the ability of some governors to influence the outcome of the 2027 general elections, despite their control of state political structures.
Kwankwaso made the remarks on Thursday while speaking at an NDC Town Hall Meeting in Rivers State.
According to him, having the support or control of more than 30 governors would not automatically guarantee victory for any political party in the 2027 elections.
He argued that the performance of individual governors would be a major factor in determining how well they could mobilise voters and campaign for their parties ahead of the elections.
Kwankwaso particularly criticised some governors in the northern part of the country, claiming that their performance in office had been poor.
He said the situation was so serious that some of the governors might find it difficult to publicly campaign for their parties because of their records in office.
The former Kano governor maintained that political control at the state level should not be mistaken for guaranteed electoral success, stressing that voters would ultimately have a say in the 2027 contest.
The remarks come as political activities and alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with major political parties and their potential candidates already positioning themselves for the contest.
