More than 30 Imo State indigenes who recently returned from South Africa have appealed to Governor Hope Uzodimma to extend the state government’s reintegration support to them.
The returnees made the appeal on Thursday while gathering a few metres from the Imo State Government House in Owerri, where they sought access to officials handling the reintegration of returnees from South Africa.
The group reportedly requested to meet with the officer in charge of the South Africa returnees’ reintegration desk, saying they wanted to be included among beneficiaries of the financial assistance provided to other returnees.
According to the returnees, some beneficiaries had received a ₦1 million grant as part of efforts to support their resettlement and enable them to establish small businesses or other means of livelihood.
They appealed to the state government to consider their situation and extend similar assistance to them, stressing that they also needed support to rebuild their lives after returning to the country.
The returnees urged Governor Uzodimma to intervene personally and ensure that those who had not been captured in the existing reintegration programme were given an opportunity to benefit.
Their appeal comes amid ongoing efforts by authorities and other stakeholders to assist Nigerians returning from foreign countries with reintegration and economic empowerment.
The returnees said they remained hopeful that the Imo State Government would respond positively to their request and provide them with the necessary support to become self-reliant.
