The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Cross River State chapter, Hon. Yibala Inyang, has commended Governor Bassey Edet Otu for the political will and commitment to revamping the Cross River State Newspaper Corporation, describing the intervention as a major lifeline for the Nigerian Chronicle.
Inyang spoke during the commissioning of the remodelled newspaper corporation in Calabar, where he said the intervention would help reposition the Nigerian Chronicle and restore its role as a major platform for information dissemination and public enlightenment in Cross River State.
ALGON Commends Otu for Reviving Chronicle
The ALGON chairman described the Nigerian Chronicle as an important institutional heritage of Cross River State and urged stakeholders to support efforts to sustain its revival.
“On behalf of the council chairmen, we want to express our appreciation to our governor for revamping this institutional heritage. It would have been a misnomer for this historic legacy to fizzle out under our watch,” Inyang said.
He charged the management and staff of the newspaper corporation to justify the investment by maintaining high standards of professionalism, objectivity and ethical journalism.
“I want to charge the journalists in the Chronicle to justify this monumental investment by the present administration by ensuring that professionalism and objectivity remain the guiding principles of the newspaper,” he said.
ALGON Announces N36 Million Donation
As part of his support for the newspaper corporation, Inyang announced a ₦36 million donation and called on the 18 local government councils and other stakeholders to support the Nigerian Chronicle through patronage and other legitimate means.
He said the intervention should be viewed beyond the revival of a media organisation, describing it as an investment in public information, accountability and the preservation of an institution that has served generations of Cross Riverians.
ALGON Backs South-South Community Food Bank
Meanwhile, Inyang has commended the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, for commissioning the South-South National Community Food Bank Project in Calabar.
He described the initiative as a demonstration of compassion and responsive leadership aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable Nigerians amid prevailing economic challenges.
“At a time of economic challenges, providing access to food for disadvantaged families is a timely and commendable intervention,” the ALGON chairman said.
The Cross River State chapter of ALGON appreciated the First Lady for extending the programme to Cross River State and pledged its support and cooperation to ensure that the benefits of the initiative reach intended beneficiaries at the grassroots.
The association said the food bank programme would provide additional support for vulnerable households while strengthening social welfare interventions across the South-South region.
