The Cross River State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a viral video showing an alleged altercation involving operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and the Chairman of Calabar Municipality Local Government Council, Apostle (Rt. Hon.) James Koko Anam.
The video, which is currently circulating on social media, reportedly relates to an incident at an undisclosed stop-and-search point within the Calabar metropolis.
Police Say Incident Occurred About Three Weeks Ago
According to the Command, preliminary information indicates that the incident occurred approximately three weeks ago during a stop-and-search operation.
However, the police stressed that the full circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been established.
Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, psc, mnips, mspsp, has directed a discreet and impartial investigation into the incident.
The investigation is expected to establish the facts, circumstances and conduct of all persons involved.
Chairman, VCRU Operatives to Give Accounts
As part of the investigation, the Command said it has commenced the process of inviting Apostle (Rt. Hon.) James Koko Anam, Chairman of Calabar Municipality Local Government Council, as well as the VCRU operatives involved, to provide their respective accounts of the incident.
The Police Command assured the public that the investigation would be conducted professionally and objectively, with due regard for the rights of all parties.
It added that any allegation of misconduct established during the investigation would be dealt with in accordance with extant laws and police regulations.
Police Urge Public Not to Jump to Conclusions
The Command also urged members of the public to refrain from drawing conclusions solely from the circulating video, noting that the footage may not contain the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police appealed to the public to allow the investigation to run its course.
