Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Emmanuel, over the alleged killing of his girlfriend identified as Chinyere.
The suspect was arrested at his residence in Olympic Layout, One-Day area of Enugu, following the incident.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement issued on Tuesday, preliminary investigation indicated that the incident followed an argument between Emmanuel and the deceased over the source of an alleged HIV infection.
The police said Emmanuel reportedly confessed during interrogation that he struck Chinyere with a pestle during the argument, after which she died.
The deceased’s full identity, including her surname, age and residential address, had not been established at the time of the police statement.
The Command said the suspect remains in custody as detectives continue investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
The police are expected to conduct further investigations and establish the facts of the case before any prosecution is pursued.
The Command also urged members of the public with relevant information about the deceased or the incident to assist investigators.
The suspect remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
