Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has recounted how he narrowly escaped what he described as an assassination attempt in Abuja in 2015, saying he believed divine intervention saved his life.
Otti disclosed this on Thursday, September 24, 2026, during the Abia Solemn Assembly and Covenant Renewal Service held in Umuahia, where he spoke about his political journey, faith and experiences before becoming governor.
According to the governor, the incident happened in July 2015 while he was in Abuja pursuing legal proceedings over the outcome of the 2015 Abia governorship election.
Otti said he had planned to remain in Abuja but eventually decided to leave for Abia after a planned meeting was repeatedly postponed. He said his friends had initially objected to his decision to travel.
The governor recalled that shortly after he left the location, armed men allegedly arrived at his residence in Maitama, Abuja, and attacked the premises.
According to him, two policemen were shot dead during the incident, while the attackers searched for him but were unable to find him because he had already left.
Otti said the attackers, who he estimated to be about 12, later searched an adjoining compound after failing to locate him.
Reflecting on the incident, the governor attributed his escape to divine intervention.
“God had taken me away,” Otti said while recounting the experience.
The governor also spoke about the advice he received from some individuals when he decided to venture into politics, including suggestions that he seek spiritual protection through traditional means.
He said he instead remained committed to his Christian faith, citing the biblical passage in Joshua 24:15: “As for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord.”
The 2015 incident, according to Otti, became one of the experiences that strengthened his conviction about his faith and his decision to remain committed to public service.
Otti eventually became governor of Abia State in 2023 after contesting the governorship election on the platform of the Labour Party.
The Solemn Assembly in Umuahia was organised by the Abia State Government as a gathering for prayers, worship and the rededication of the state.
