Argentina Open Talks to Extend Lionel Scaloni Contract
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has confirmed that talks are underway with Lionel Scaloni over a new contract that could keep him as Argentina head coach until the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
AFA president Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia and Scaloni have met to advance discussions over the proposed extension, with the contract proposal reportedly sent this week.
Scaloni is now in advanced talks with the AFA as both sides work toward reaching an agreement. The decision on his future is expected to come once the ongoing negotiations are concluded.
Argentina are keen for Scaloni to remain in charge beyond the 2026 World Cup cycle, with the federation wanting continuity under the coach who has overseen a highly successful period for the national team.
The proposed extension would also see Scaloni continue leading Argentina into the next stage of the project, potentially taking the team toward the 2030 World Cup.
The discussions come as Argentina prepare for a new era following Lionel Messi’s eventual retirement from international football. The AFA reportedly wants Scaloni to remain in charge even after Messi’s departure from the national team.
With negotiations now at an advanced stage, Argentina and Scaloni appear focused on continuing their journey together.
Together again.
