NELFUND Loan: What UNICAL Students Must Do Before Applying for 2026/2027

Written by Mary Bassey

Students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) seeking to apply for the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) student loan for the 2026/2027 academic session have been advised to first update their student information on the university’s portal before proceeding with their loan application.

Steps to Apply for the NELFUND Student Loan

1. Update your details on the UNICAL student portal

Students should first update their information through the UNICAL student portal:

https://studentdata.unical.edu.ng

After updating the information, students are advised to allow 24 to 48 hours for the details to reflect before proceeding to the NELFUND portal.

2. Visit the NELFUND portal

Go to the official NELFUND application portal:

https://portal.nelf.gov.ng/dashboard

3. Create an account or log in

New applicants should sign up using the required identification details, which may include their JAMB registration number or matriculation number, alongside a valid email address and phone number.

Applicants should create a secure password and proceed to their dashboard.

4. Complete your profile

Students are expected to provide their personal, academic and contact information as requested on the portal.

Where required, applicants should also provide their National Identification Number (NIN), Bank Verification Number (BVN) and valid bank account details.

5. Upload the required documents

Applicants should upload the documents requested on the portal. These may include:

– Admission letter
– School identification card, where required

Students should ensure that all uploaded documents and information are accurate and legible.

6. Submit the application

Before submitting, applicants should carefully review the information provided to avoid errors.

Students should also check the upkeep section and ensure their preferred option is correctly selected before completing the application.

After submission, applicants are advised to regularly monitor their NELFUND dashboard for updates on the status of their application.

Important Step After Applying

Applicants should note that after completing the application, the portal may require them to select “Pay fees to institution.”

Students are advised to follow the instruction displayed on their dashboard to ensure their application progresses properly.

The application will subsequently undergo the required verification by the institution and NELFUND before any approved funds are disbursed.

For Returning NELFUND Beneficiaries

Students who previously applied for or benefited from the NELFUND scheme are advised to log in to their existing accounts and apply directly from their dashboards rather than creating a new account.

Returning applicants should review their existing information and update any details that may have changed.

Important: Students should carefully follow the bank-account requirements displayed on the official NELFUND portal and avoid using an account that does not meet NELFUND’s requirements. They should also rely on official NELFUND and UNICAL announcements for the latest application instructions.

Students are encouraged to keep checking their portals after submitting their applications for verification updates and further instructions.
