The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved a petition by the family of late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, seeking a fresh and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The development was disclosed by the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement dated September 29, 2026, confirming that the police have commenced a new investigative process.
According to the lawyer, the Aloba family submitted the petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, and it was received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7.
The petition reportedly raised concerns over inconsistencies in the previous investigation and called for a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of the events surrounding the singer’s death.
Following its approval, the petition was forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command for immediate action and subsequently assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau.
Ogungbe disclosed that a representative of the family had already been invited by the new investigative team and had engaged with the officers handling the case.
He added that the family remained actively involved in the process and was willing to provide relevant documents, information, witnesses and other materials that could assist investigators in establishing the facts.
The development comes days after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a separate suit filed by the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation, which sought to compel the police to reopen investigations into Mohbad’s death.
However, the family clarified that the dismissed suit was neither filed nor authorised by the Aloba family, stressing that the court’s decision had no bearing on the separate police investigation initiated through its petition.
The family urged the police to conduct the fresh investigation with diligence, independence and professionalism, examining all relevant individuals and circumstances.
It also emphasised that its objective was not to prejudge the outcome or engage in trial by media, but to ensure a credible and transparent process capable of establishing the truth.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27, triggering widespread public concern and calls for justice. More than three years after his death, questions surrounding the circumstances of the incident continue to draw public attention.
The family maintained that the fresh investigation remains ongoing, expressing hope that the process would provide answers and bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
