New Pay Alert: Nigerian Soldiers Confirm Salary Increase Has Hit Bank Accounts

Written by Mary Bassey

Nigerian soldiers have confirmed that the Federal Government’s newly approved salary increase has started reflecting in their bank accounts, marking the implementation of a major pay adjustment for members of the Armed Forces.

The development follows President Bola Tinubu’s approval of salary increases ranging from 30 per cent to 80 per cent for military personnel, aimed at improving their welfare and recognising their sacrifices in safeguarding the country.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed on Wednesday that military personnel had begun receiving their September salaries with the revised pay structure reflected in their payments.

According to reports, soldiers from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant are benefiting from the full 80 per cent salary increase, while other ranks are receiving adjustments based on the approved structure.

Under the new arrangement, personnel from Warrant Officer to Colonel are entitled to a 50 per cent increase, while officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals, are receiving a 30 per cent increase.

The salary adjustment took effect from September 1, 2026, and is expected to benefit approximately 250,000 personnel across the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force.

The Federal Government’s annual salary expenditure for the Armed Forces is also projected to rise from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion following the implementation.

President Tinubu had earlier emphasised the importance of improving military welfare, noting that personnel who risk their lives to protect Nigerians deserve adequate support and appreciation.

The implementation comes amid ongoing military operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across different parts of the country.

With the new salaries now reflecting in accounts, the development represents a significant step in the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the financial welfare of military personnel.
