The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Nigerian educationist, Dr Amos Josiah Dangut, as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant leadership change at the regional examination body.
Dangut, who previously served as the Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, will oversee the council’s operations across its five member countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Liberia.
His appointment was ratified by the WAEC Council at its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026. He officially assumed office on October 1, 2026, for a five-year tenure running until September 2031.
He succeeds Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia, becoming the 14th Registrar of the council since its establishment.
Dangut’s appointment follows years of service within WAEC, having joined the organisation in 1998 as an Assistant Registrar II before rising through various administrative and examination management positions.
Prior to his new role, he served as Head of the Nigeria National Office from October 2023 to September 2026, where he championed several initiatives aimed at improving examination administration, security and efficiency.
Among the innovations introduced under his leadership were the rollout of Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the digital electronic marking system, question paper serialisation and the expansion of WAEC’s digital certificate services.
Born on October 2, 1967, in Plateau State, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science and a PhD in Animal Science, as well as a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.
He also has extensive experience in educational assessment, examination security and the application of information and communication technology to examination processes.
His emergence as Registrar places him at the helm of an institution responsible for conducting major public examinations and awarding certificates across West Africa.
The appointment is expected to usher in a new phase of leadership as WAEC continues to pursue improvements in examination integrity, digital transformation and service delivery across the sub-region.
