The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has reportedly released Elijah Noah, the state coordinator of the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Movement, and other supporters arrested ahead of a planned political rally in Uyo.
The release comes a day after security operatives apprehended the movement’s members during preparations for the October 1 Independence Day march organised in support of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The planned procession, tagged the *Two Million-Man March*, was expected to attract supporters from across Akwa Ibom State.
However, the event was disrupted following a directive by the state police command asking political groups to suspend or reschedule rallies, meetings and processions scheduled for Independence Day over security concerns.
The police had cited intelligence reports suggesting that political gatherings could be exploited to cause disturbances and threaten public peace.
The arrests sparked reactions from supporters of the movement, who questioned the decision to detain members preparing for the rally.
The development also generated discussions about the right to peaceful assembly and the role of security agencies in managing political activities.
The police had earlier confirmed the arrest of eight persons in connection with the disturbance, stating that the suspects were assisting with investigations.
The reported release of Noah and the other detainees marks a new development in the controversy surrounding the aborted rally, which has drawn attention to political activities in Akwa Ibom ahead of the 2027 elections.
