NANS Raises Alarm Over Ogun Institute, Makes Fresh Demand to State Government

Written by Mary Bassey

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Ogun State Government to upgrade the Gateway Industrial and Petro-Gas Institute, Oni, to a full-fledged polytechnic, citing concerns over the institution’s prolonged neglect, inadequate funding and poor staff welfare.

The students’ body said the proposed conversion from a monotechnic to a polytechnic would help address some of the challenges facing the institution and improve its capacity to deliver quality technical and vocational education.

NANS Secretary-General, Oladimeji Uthman, made the appeal in a statement issued on Sunday, expressing concern over what he described as the persistent neglect of the institute and the difficult working conditions of its employees.

Uthman stressed the need for urgent government intervention, noting that sustained investment in the institution would strengthen its academic structure, improve staff welfare and create better opportunities for students.

He urged the Ogun State Government to take concrete steps towards addressing the concerns raised, including reviewing the institution’s funding and considering its elevation to polytechnic status.

The call comes amid growing concerns over the need to strengthen technical and vocational education in Nigeria, particularly institutions designed to equip young people with practical skills for employment and industrial development.

NANS maintained that addressing the challenges confronting the Gateway Industrial and Petro-Gas Institute would not only benefit its students and staff but also contribute to the development of technical education in Ogun State.
