The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of motorists found driving vehicles without valid number plates as part of renewed efforts to strengthen security and enforce traffic regulations across Abuja.
The directive is aimed at curbing the use of unregistered vehicles and those with concealed, altered, defaced or unauthorised number plates, which authorities say could make it difficult to identify vehicles linked to criminal activities.
The move is also part of broader efforts to enhance public safety, improve security surveillance and prevent criminals from exploiting unidentifiable vehicles to evade law enforcement.
Under the enforcement exercise, vehicles found violating the regulations may be stopped, impounded and subjected to appropriate legal proceedings in line with existing laws.
The police have urged motorists, transport operators and vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles carry valid, properly issued and clearly visible number plates at all times.
The development follows a nationwide directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, instructing police commands to intensify enforcement against vehicles operating without registration plates or with concealed and tampered identification details.
The police have maintained that the exercise is a security measure intended to protect lives and property, rather than an attempt to inconvenience law-abiding motorists.
Motorists have therefore been advised to comply with vehicle registration requirements to avoid arrest, vehicle impoundment and possible prosecution.
