Amupitan Reveals What INEC Workers Need Before 2027

Written by Mary Bassey

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, has called for better pay and improved welfare for staff of the electoral body.

Amupitan said INEC workers are among the lowest-paid workers in the country, stressing that improving their salaries would be important if Nigerians expect the commission and its personnel to perform their duties effectively and remain accountable.

According to the INEC chairman, workers who are expected to handle sensitive electoral responsibilities should be provided with wages that enable them to meet their basic needs.

“If we want to demand and hold INEC responsible, we should give them a living wage,” Amupitan said.

His comment comes amid ongoing discussions about the need to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system, improve the welfare of election officials and ensure that INEC operates with greater efficiency and independence.

Amupitan’s position also highlights the argument that adequate remuneration and improved working conditions could help motivate electoral officials and reduce vulnerabilities that may affect the credibility of elections.

The INEC chairman has continued to emphasise the need for reforms that would strengthen public confidence in the electoral process ahead of future elections.
